This is the Statt Mann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.
For years now marketers have been saying that drifting is a young man’s game for the ever popular 18-29 age group.
Well last weekend the highlight of the Formula Drift event at Infineon Raceway was a red Corvette that battled its way to the Final Four. It was the best debut ever for a new car in Formula D competition.
Now the people who are supposed to know such things would say that the Formula D “youngsters” wouldn’t be interested in an American muscle car marketed at their Daddy’s in Chevrolet showrooms. (Truly this wasn't their Daddy's Corvette!!)
But that was far from what happened. The car was the most popular at Infineon. People lined up to get a picture with it!
And better than that, the car is owned by an executive who’s a Vice President of the Long Beach Grand Prix. Dwight told me he built the car because he’s a Corvette Freak and his wife told him to build something the kid could race!
I imagine all that skipped ALL the marketing seminars that are supposed to describe drifting!!
The point is racing’s racing and trying to pigeon hole the fans or competitors into one group or another is an exercise in futility.
You wonder when they’ll ever learn.
Peace.
