This is the Statt Mann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.
A couple months ago a friend told me about Detroit automakers approaching NASCAR about running something that looks like what they have in their disappearing, customer-starved showrooms.
The inference in my friend’s news was that we’d see Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers in Sprint Cup or, at least in Nationwide; kind of like the old Trans-Am. After all, this was STOCK car racing, right?
Well this week we got a glimpse of the future and it’s a pig with lipstick.
What came from the Detroit request was a standard Nationwide stock car body with a Mustang nose. The story implicated Ford was the first to sign on to the idea.
The Mustang is a beautiful design, well received by the public and racers in other series.
But NASCAR thought it was adequate to just rip off the nose and staple it to a Nationwide body. An answer to a question no one was asking.
It shows how out of touch these decision makers are. NASCAR is one thing but I would have expected more from Ford, the only one of the big three to survive the recession without government bailouts.
Go online and see for yourself. Just hideous.
Peace.
