This is the Statt Mann Baby!!  Time to Scatt a little bit.

While the NFL and others struggle with the issue of concussion safety for its competitors, the motor racing world appears to be whistling down the dark tunnel of don’t ask, don’t tell.

Racing constantly talks about the rear view mirror and safety belts, but it took a series of deaths a few years ago before racing stepped into the preventative world of HANS devices and safety walls to protect drivers.

Still, a HANS device may not protect a driver from concussion or damage when the brain’s soft tissue slams into the inside of the skull during an accident.

I’ve even had drag racers tell me they used to have headaches until Wednesday after a normal Sunday competition.  They said a HANS device helps but the pains may still stick around until Monday now.

And we’ve seen stock car drivers jump from one ball of jumbled steel to an unjumbled ball after an accident and we sigh at their bravery.

But is anyone checking them for the brain damage symptoms of a concussion in those few minutes in a track side clinic?  Can you tell that quickly?

Sadly, how soon before we cry when all the Kings horses and all the King’s men can’t put our favorite Humpty’s brain back together again?
