This is the Statt Mann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.
This week I was talking with Finnish rally driver Mikko Hirvonen, winner of the Swedish Rally, the first event in the World Rally Championship season. It was a few days before the Rally Mexico, second stop in the WRC season.
When asked if he would be going as hard as he can in Mexico or competing against Loeb he would only say “I always go flat out. It's what I do.” It would appear that the game isn't the competition as much as it is the game itself. Some people can be successful just competing within themselves.
For them it’s not a points race or satisfaction with finishing 20th or better or being 35 in points to get the money.
Many years ago I did a series of articles that described why racers race. A psychologist who'd done the investigation explained that sometimes an athlete wants to compete within himself. He doesn’t have to see the opponent lose.
Hirvonen fits that description. He told me you “always go flat out and see where you are.”
What if we used that attitude in life? Don't worry about the competition, just go hard and let the results take care of themselves. Source that out in the mirror if you dare…
Peace.
