This is the Stattmann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.
I was watching the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT race from Sebring last week and was excited to see Michael McCann get his first World Challenge win driving a Viper Comp Coupe.
McCann knows how to win. He won three championships in four seasons in the Viper Racing League.
My interest wasn’t so much in McCann’s first win but I’m always fascinated when a driver moves from an also ran to a race winner. I always wonder when that moment occurs.
There are several steps to racing. You first need to learn how to go fast. Then you need to learn how to slow down enough to win. Then you need to learn winning time so a championship can turn up on your doorstep.
McCann appears to be in the midst of learning his lessons. So is Kasey Kahne who won at Atlanta last weekend.
Kahne told me that things are slowing down in his third season at the Nextel Cup level. His results are proving it. Kahne has a win and three top fives going into Sunday’s race at Bristol, the fourth Cup race of the young season.
Some guys get the headlines but never learn what McCann and Kahne appear to be learning.
That applies on the racetrack and in life. You’ve gotta learn winning time or stay on the porch!
Peace…
