NASCAR Critical of Indy Road Course

I was disappointed several NASCAR Cup drivers criticized running on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend.

They argued the squared oval was more prestigious. That’s true but the road course at Indy has had eight Formula One races from 2000 to 2007. If it’s good enough for a World Championship should be good enough for Cup racing.

No, I think it’s a resource problem. Running on an oval is set up for full throttle as long as possible on a lap. That takes expensive speed and handling resources.

Road course racing requires resources for speed and handling but it also requires resources in the driver’s tool bag. In short, some drivers just don’t have the race craft to know when to be patient and when it’s winning time in the pack.

Next time you hear drivers complain about road course racing, watch where they finish in the race and you’ll have an idea of where the complaints come from in the car.
