SpeedFreaks Celebrate Accomplishment, History, Hope
& Change We Can Believe In
Musician Jon Butcher add Personal Stories and Reflections
on What This Week Really Means
Hollywood, CA (January 20, 2009) – To say this weekend and this week have been and will be historic would be an extreme understatement. President-Elect Barack Obama is becoming the first black President in the United States.
SpeedFreaks wanted to salute such a significant accomplishment and put into place a first for them, and really for the entire motorsports community, a complete national show dedicated to African Americans in motorsports. This past Sunday night far exceeded the Freak Nation’s expectations.
SpeedFreaks celebrated the upcoming Inauguration of Barack Obama with motorsports stars who each have broken barriers in the racing world much like President-Elect Obama has in Politics. Willy T. Ribbs in F1, IndyCar, Sports Cars & NASCAR; James Stewart in Supercross; Bill Lester in NASCAR & Sports Cars and Antron Brown in Drag Racing all contributed to the Freaks special occasion. Joining that significant motorsports line-up was acclaimed guitarist and singer Jon Butcher, a man who has toured with the biggest names in music and has seen his share of racism and bigotry from all sides as well. Butcher joined SpeedFreaks in the Lucas Oil Studios with axe in hand, shared his stories from center stage and cranked out some jams of inspiration. He even weighed in with an interesting take on the controversial topic of whether or not motorsports sanctioning bodies should do more to find rides for minority drivers or riders.
After such an astounding show, SpeedFreaks own Statt Mann Caruthers said, “When we started this program nearly nine years ago we made a decision to be about lifestyle and culture as well as motorsports. I believe members of The Freak Nation are intelligent enough to have an opinion on the history that will be made Tuesday when President-Elect Barack Obama is inaugurated, and what that means to them, their lifestyle, their culture and their sport. Sunday night I was proud to share in that conversation, just as if we were sitting in the grandstands together.”
