This is the Statt Mann Baby. Time to Scatt a little bit.
Speed is such a fickle thing. Many equate it with racing. But, to me racing is more about competition than speed.
For example, Olympic sprinters are going about 23 miles an hour in the 100-meter dash. And those races can be more exciting than a stock car race at 200 mph.
NASCAR driver Kyle Larson kind of said that after testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week. He said driving at speed at Texas felt faster than the testing at Indianapolis even though the Indy laps were about 30 miles an hour faster.
That sensation might be caused by downforce at Indy where you would feel more in control at 230 than the stock car at Texas at 195.
Larson this week also said the IndyCar looked faster at distance than when he was racing next to it wheel-to-wheel.
To me, competition is the true nature of racing. You might cheer if your guy is out front, but the show is more interesting when the competition is close.
Think about that the next time one car is dominating a race and you reach for the remote to change the channel.
Peace.
