So unless you were living under a rock this weekend, it was all about the ladies in motorsports! First, Freak Friend and ESPN commentator Jamie Little won the Long Beach Grand Prix Celebrity Race, beating NASCAR Truck Driver Mike Skinner to the line… then Danica Patrick won the IndyCar race in Japan, becoming the first female IndyCar winner in the history of the sport… and then Simona de Silvestro, a female driver I have been hearing a LOT about recently, went out and took the Long Beach Atlantic win on Sunday morning, as only the 2nd woman driver to do so in that series.

A freakin' female trifecta… all estrogen power, baby!

But before I get to the estrogen overload, there were other races and other winners on the weekend, believe it or not!

South of the border, Kyle Busch took the ‘N’ Busch race… wait a minute, now that Danica has won in IndyCar, just two weeks after Graham Rahal made history with his first win, I do believe the momentum has swung in IndyCar’s direction, so I will resume calling NASCAR what it is… just NASCAR. No more believing that the ‘N’ word is a bad word. There won’t be any open wheel defections to the stock car series for a while now. But I will still call the 2nd series the Busch Series… it just rolls off the tongue easier… and is easier to type (lazy ass me).

So back to NASCAR, Kyle’s win was just another one for Toyota to chalk up… they, partnered with Joe Gibbs Racing, have been such a great story all year… in all three NASCAR series! Truly incredible combo of Kyle Busch-Joe Gibbs Racing-Toyota. Though possibly overshadowing Kyle’s win was the altercation between Boris Said and Marcos Ambrose’s crew chief – now that was classic! Said was obviously quite upset about being taken out of the race due to an on track incident between the two of them on a restart. Fast forward a couple of laps to when Boris met with Marcos’ crew chief in the pits and yowza! I’ve never heard Boris Said that mad before! He not only (accidentally) dropped the s-bomb on ESPN, but also just flat apologized for wrecking a future car of Ambrose as ‘payback’… ouch! I’ve never been a fan of using cars as weapons, but having said that, I know drivers make those threats often in the heat of the moment and I absolutely LOVE the emotion of the sport. Not to mention that when you have one of the best drivers in the world making love taps with a car, it most likely won’t do too much since they are experts at car control.

Quick sidenote – how about Robby Gordon taking his ‘week off’ to Europe where he is campaigning (yes current tense as it is still going on) his Hummer in the Central European Rally. This is one of many rallies that was created to help off-set the cancellation of the Dakar Rally earlier in the year. Stage One was Sunday and our American hero finished 2nd in the stage to Carlos Sainz. Now THAT is kick ass… keep it up Robby! To follow his progress, hit centraleuroperally.com

On to more drama… it was heating up in Supercross in St. Louis. With points leader Chad Reed injured, heck riding with a cracked shoulder blade (gasp), it pretty much was all up to Kevin Windham to do what he had to do to win the event and make up as many points as possible for the championship. Well, he did that and took the win. But where did Chad Reed get his umpf from? He freakin’ rode to a 2nd place finish! Remember… WITH a cracked shoulder blade! Just 13 points now separate the two of them with two races remaining… oh yes!

Sticking with two wheels, Barber Motorsports Park had a damn good weekend for the AMA Superbikes… Aaron Yates went three in a row in ‘Bama with his win in Superstock, Jake Zemke chalked up another one in Formula Xtreme and 17 year old Josh Herrin drag raced his teammate, former champion Ben Bostrom on the front stretch to win his 2nd overall race in Supersport. Josh is the future of this sport… you will begin to hear a LOT of his name moving forward. If you’d like to get a glimpse into his personality, listen to our podcast from Sunday night… we had him on to kick off the 2nd hour. The Superbike doubleheader was dominated by the 6x champion Mat Mladin, picking up his 65th and 66th overall wins… with the SpeedFreaks Mojo, of course, that he earned by calling into our show last week!

On to the West Coast where open wheel fans bid adieu to the Champ Car Series, formerly known as CART. It definitely was a bit sad, as race winner Will Power told us on the show Sunday night, but at the same time, everyone knows that this merger with the IndyCar series is what is sorely needed in American Open Wheel. Many of the diehard Champ Car drivers, such as Will, made comments throughout the weekend that they couldn’t believe how well the Champ Cars drove compared to the IndyCars they just drove in St. Pete… horsepower was a HUGE difference apparently, where the Champ Cars took off much easier, quicker and more powerfully. The guys said they will miss that ‘feeling’, but Jimmy Vasser seemed quite confident in his comments that fans shouldn’t fear… the turbos WILL be back in the next engine/chassis contract. Now THAT should be music to everyone’s ears!! Team owner Dale Coyne even joked that it will be sad to go from driving 21st century rocketships back to 1970’s sort of cars for a while, but he was also confident that great changes are ahead for IndyCar in that capacity.

So again, Will Power became the final ever Champ Car winner by taking the checkers at the Long Beach Grand Prix. Other winners at the beach were Marco Werner and Lucas Luhr in American LeMans (such a cool race), and then a few females: Simona de Silvestro in the Mazda Atlantic race (her first win in Atlantics and 2nd for a female in the series) and ESPN broadcaster Jamie Little in the Celebrity race… Jamie even outran NASCAR Trucker Mike Skinner for the trophy!

And of course pair those two female wins with the big story on the weekend, that of Danica Patrick winning the IndyCar race in Japan, and you have some great fodder amongst friends… or frenemies maybe. First of all, HUGE congrats go out to Danica for taking her first win in the top tier of Motorsports… it’s very big for the IndyCar series (as she has been and will be all over the talk show scene this week)… and it’s very big for Danica… as Lyn St. James pointed out on Sunday night’s show, this win is coming early in the season, where she can easily build on that momentum and make quite a season out of it. Danica took time out of her oh so busy schedule to chat with the Freaks on Sunday night, too… check it out in our Winner of the Week section.

So let’s talk a bit about this female power! Danica wins… Simona wins… Jamie wins… I’m lovin’ it! But STILL many are not? Yep, some guys, and I do mean GUYS, just can’t grasp a female actually winning in a male dominated sport. Now, these are mostly stick and ball guys who haven’t been able to grasp the concept of female equality in sports, but in 2008 that mentality should just be banned IMO.

Get this… Kenny and I were driving back from the RACER party on Saturday night in Long Beach when a Fox Sports Radio host got a call from a listener in the New England area. He began by saying that he is not a Danica Patrick fan, but that he was so impressed with her win that night… and then he asked why the broadcast didn’t have any mention of Danica’s win in the leading news? The closed-minded broadcaster answered by saying that her win was in Japan, no one was watching and that no one really cared… he then proceeded to say that she should win one on US soil before anyone will take her serious. Hmmm… he definitely didn’t hear the phone calls from CNN, Good Morning America, Leno and the large amount of people who DO care.

Then there were the fans in Long Beach who just can’t let the CART-IRL split be bygones… I heard comments from, “IndyCar set it up for her to win to overshadow Champ Car’s final race… it’s a set-up, it can’t be real…” to “It must have been fuel strategy cause she can’t win one legitimately.” Let me address that one right now… how many races have been won in this series on fuel stragegy? TONS!!!!! And since Danica is the first female to win in IndyCar, then all the other fuel strategy wins were done so by male drivers… where were the complaints then? Get over it folks… she DID win legitimately and did so rather dominantly as well.

But the part that really pisses me off is that it is 2008 and we are having this argument. Come on people, this should be more and more normal… if you still have an issue with a female winning in a male world or a black man winning in a white world or a Christian man winning in a Jewish world, then you have issues inside yourself that must be addressed. Do it now before you explode with anger because we are all only at the beginning, at the tip of the iceberg, at the front of this large wave that we will ride into eternity… and it is so exciting!

You go girls!
