This is the Statt Mann Baby!!  Time to Scatt a little bit.

The new Car of Tomorrow has created some unintended consequences in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing this year.

First, I continue to believe the guys are driving more recklessly because the car’s advanced safety lets them emerge from most accidents without injury.

That’s obviously good but guys without fear doing fearful things only raises the level of danger on the racetrack.

But I believe this will be a good thing in the long run.  We’re seeing different names at the front of the line early in this season.

Right now there are three different names in the top 12 that weren’t there a year ago.  Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Juan Montoya are eighth, eleventh and twelfth in points.

After Richmond last year Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch were first, third and ninth.  Now you need GPS to find them in the points.

The new car was supposed to open new doors for new teams by equalizing the competition.   That’s happening.

But if the equalized competition creates the potential for restricter plate crashes every weekend, what have we gained?

Peace.
