This is the Statt Mann Baby!!  Time to Scatt a little bit.

Remember the saying back in the day that implied “they came for all the others and I said nothing; then they came for me and there was no one to speak for me?”

I was reminded of that when I thought about NASCAR drivers and drug testing.

For years they pointed at other athletes in stick and ball sports saying we’re nothing like them.  They implied they were perfect and didn’t need things like unions or spokesmen.  Anti unionism was a culture in the garage.

But that may change.

NASCAR’s zero tolerance policy and its secret drug testing guidelines has the drivers looking for someone to listen.

In 1969 NASCAR drivers created a union over safety issues.  They wanted safer tires for the high speeds at Talladega.  But NASCAR said my way or the highway and hired replacements.  No more serious Union talk.

Maybe NASCAR drivers should have been speaking up for someone else the last few years and not worrying about who’s got the best jet or biggest house on Lake Norman.  Now there’s no one to speak for them when they most need a voice.

Today, you need protection even when you’re following all the rules.

You experienced that lately?

Peace.
