This is the Statt Mann Baby. Time to Scatt a little bit.

Some thoughts this week. Like in NASCAR at the Cup level.

Why not let Goodyear bring more than one set of tires for racing? That would introduce strategy into the mix.

We’re told there was a soft tire at Martinsville Sunday. What if there was a soft, medium and hard tire forcing crew chiefs to go to another level of planning for a given race.

And I know there are many reasons to dislike race steward decisions but what if they were watching Cup races and throwing the flag when rules are broken? Drivers and teams recover from drive through penalties all the time.

But what if time penalties were added to a race result? That would force drivers to pay more attention to each other and their own race craft.

And, finally, Wild Card entries into the playoffs have engaged fans in stick and ball sports. Why not a Wild Card team in the Cup playoffs?

The natural Wild Card would be the driver with the most wins that’s not already eligible for the next round of the playoffs. That would have been Kyle Larson for most of the last playoff round.

Weird I know but what’s not weird about the current format? What could be more flexible than the rubber rules already in place?

Peace.
