This is the Stattmann Baby!! Time to Scatt a little bit.
That sport compact revolution that began maybe ten years ago hasn’t even begun to explode yet. We all thought sport compact drag racing was the explosion but that may just be the roiling water before the pot starts to boil.
A friend in marketing at a major manufacturer warned me a couple years ago that drag racing has reached a plateau.
Dependency on manufacturer money is a major problem. I say it’s sad because once the manufacturer reaches a goal, a goal known only to it’s own budgetary planning, that manufacturer is gone leaving the sport scrambling.
Manufacturers of sport compact cars aren’t responding to drag racing like they are to the more production based activities in World Challenge, Grand Am Cup and NASA’s US Touring Car Championship.
I get the feeling, the manufacturers who are in drag racing are looking around asking themselves: “And…!?” Even some of the pioneer drivers are looking around for “what’s next?!”
The model for the future might be Ford’s success with its new Mustang in Grand Am Cup. Race wins, potential championships and customer cars flying out the door is what makes car makers happy.
Racing revolutions are based on happiness and success.
Peace.
