This is the Statt Mann, Baby. It’s time to Scatt a Little Bit…
It dawned on me this weekend that a problem with marketing certain motorsports is the wonder of it all. It’s just gone today.
I remember where I was when I heard the results of the first Baja 1000 down the peninsula to Cabo San Lucas. I was in my Triumph sports car on The 10 in Los Angeles when the guy on news radio was talking about this insane event.
My mind wandered to dune buggies and Baja Bugs and rocks and cactus and couldn’t imagine what it must have been like.
This week they ran the 47th Baja 1000 and it was a matter of fact thing won by Rob MacCachren, Andy McMillin and Jason Voss in a Ford F-150. There was no drama or wonder just another race won by another vehicle.
Now I don’t want danger. Danger is different than drama. And if the same guys win any kind of race, where’s the wonder?
Forty-seven years ago a mainstream news program told me about the progress and results of the race. This year it was a bad press release.
Where’s the wonder in that?
Peace.
