World Sports Cars at Indy

I spent a few hours in Indy this week watching the SRO World Challenge teams get ready for Sunday’s eight hour race at the Indianapolis motor Speedway.

Watching sports cars with largely equal driving talent on the Indy road course was notable. Some didn’t even have money presses in their motor coaches to make ends meet.

World Challenge has been around since the 70s.

In 2016 it scooped American sports car racing by adopting FIA GT-4 rules and the series exploded all over everyone. Fields grew. Interest grew globally. And costs actually leveled off with the sprint race format. Teams left IMSA’s tire bills and the racing was wonderful.

World Challenge includes snarling big bore Bentley’s and Aston Martins. And you’ll see Hyundais and Minis in their own race. It’s sports car racing at its best with gentlemen racers as well as the fastest professionals.
